NEW DELHI: "An alarming revelation comes from a recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report that states that the number of overweight children has doubled and overweight adolescents have tripled over the last decade. While genes are an important factor in determining a person's susceptibility to putting on weight, the behaviour patterns, societal changes and worldwide nutrition transition are driving the obesity epidemic. It must be realised that obesity is not a lifestyle problem, it is a disease and needs to be treated,'' said the Chairman of the Department of Minimal Access Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr. Pradeep Chowbey, here on Tuesday. He along with a working group for endosurgery education in Asia organised the First Asia Pacific Advanced Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery Course in the Capital that concluded on Tuesday. For people with clinically severe obesity, bariatric surgery is the standard of careWhen other medically supervised methods have failed, bariatric surgery offers the best option of long-term weight control for those with clinically severe obesity. One of the most popular and successful surgical approaches is the Roux-en-Y Gastric By-pass.
