Prasar Bharati to offer more channels on `DD Direct Plus'

Staff Correspondent

100 television channels and 50 radio channels will be available

MANIPAL: C hief Executive Officer of the Prasar Bharati Board K.S. Sarma said here on Tuesday that "Doordarshan Direct Plus", the free direct to home service of the Prasar Bharati, will provide 100 television channels and 50 radio channels by the end of this year.

Delivering a talk on "Managing Media Organisations" organised by the Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC), Mr. Sarma said that all the 100 television channels and 50 radio channels will be provided free of cost on the DD Direct Plus platform. At present, the DD Direct Plus platform is offering 33 television channels and 12 radio channels.

Of the 33 channels, 19 belong to the Doordarshan and the rest are private television channels. Since all television channels on DD Direct Plus are on the Ku Band, the picture quality is much better than that which comes through the cable operators. The radio services of Prasar Bharati are much sought after in the rural areas, he said. Prasar Bharati is a public service broadcaster, which provides free service to people.

There is no such example anywhere in the world. Chairman of Prasar Bharati Board M.V. Kamath, Director of Manipal Institute of Communication Buroshiva Dasgupta and Director of Manipal Institute of Management K.V.M. Varambally, were present.
