Commodity rates

The following were the rates (per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Tuesday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: Groundnut oil-47.50, palmolein oil-38.75, sunflower oil-47, tamarind (flower variety)-21 to 28, tamarind (karipuli variety)-42 to 48, chillies (new)-10 to 15, rice (2716)-13, rice (super fine)-15, rice (sona masoori)-16 to 17, rice (samba masoori)-15 to 17, black gram-35 and red gram-21 to 26.50.

Facility for artistes

The 45th division corporator Pilli Lakhsmi Tulasi has said that the artistes, who are not able to give performances for lack of financial support, can use a new facility offered by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. They can use Tummalapalli Kala Kshetra for giving free performance. Ms. Tulasi said the general body of VMC gave its agreement for this recently.

Review of sanitary conditions

Commissioner of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Natarajan Gulzar visited several localities in the city and reviewed the sanitation situation on Tuesday. He enquired about the problems of local people at Moghalrajapuram hill area, Indiranagar, Loy Bayamma Street, Shyamsundar House Road, Vijayanagar Colony, Gangireddula Dibba, Lurdunagar and other areas. Residents of Christurajapuram sought repairs to drains and improved drinking water supply.

NSS special camp

The NSS unit of Nalanda Degree College will conduct a Pongal special service camp at Railway Station on January 18 at 11.30 a.m. The volunteers at the camp will receive the sportspersons coming to participate in the All India inter-university championship 2005-06. About 500 volunteers will attend the camp and be available on day and night shifts, says NSS programme officer of Nalanda Degree College.

Blindfold driving

Artist Praveen impressed the people of the city for two hours on Tuesday by driving blindfolded along the important thoroughfares, as part of the theme procession organised by Tata Indicom. The rally was organised to celebrate the success of non-stop mobile offer, a company spokesman said.
