This Day That Age
Len Hutton, the England and Yorkshire batsman, announced in London on January 17 his retirement from first-class cricket. Hutton, now 39, had the distinction in 1952 of being the first professional cricketer to be chosen to captain England. Altogether he led England in 23 Test matches until ill health forced him to withdraw. Under his captaincy England regained "The Ashes" from Australia in 1953. Shortly after returning last May from Australia, where his side won the series, Hutton was appointed to lead England in last season's five Tests against South Africa, but he asked to be excused from Test duty. Hutton holds the world individual Test record score of 364 made against Australia at the Oval in 1938. This is the longest ever first-class innings lasting 13 hours 17 minutes. Hutton scored 19 Test centuries during his career which began just before his 18th birthday, 39,950 runs in first-class cricket and altogether compiled 129 centuries. He played in 72 Tests. Only one cricketer, W.R. Hammond of England, has played in more Tests than Hutton.
