Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The leader of the Pondicherry State unit of the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) C. Jayakumar MLA, called upon the Congress Government to ensure that farmers and the poor who were affected by the recent rain in Pondicherry were paid adequate compensation. Talking to reporters here on Wednesday Mr. Jayakumar, a former Local Administration Minister, said no assessment was done about the extent of loss of huts and farm produce. A compensation of Rs. 4000 for an hectare was a pittance. The payment should be raised adequately so that the farmers did not suffer.
Contest in all segments
Mr. Jayakumar said that while it was prepared to contest the Assembly polls in all 30 segments on its own, any decision on alliance would however be taken nearer the poll date. He made it clear that on no account would his party have any truck with the Bharatiya Janata party. If alliance became absolutely necessary with any party (except the BJP) his party would be prepared for a "honourable share", he said. Mr. Jayakumar continues to retain his TMC (Moopanar) party label, unmindful of the merger of the TMC with ruling Congress in 2001. In the last polls, two candidates were returned on TMC ticket to the Pondicherry Assembly.
