Valsaraj for simplifying admission procedure

PUBLICATIONS: Health, Economics and Statistics Minister of Pondicherry E. Valsaraj going through the publications of the Department of Economics and Statistics after releasing them in Pondicherry on Wednesday.

PONDICHERRY: Health Minister E. Valsaraj said a simplified procedure for admission to professional colleges would make it easier for students interested in pursuing higher education.

He refused to comment on the Tamil Nadu Government's decision to scrap the common entrance test for admission to professional courses. Asked whether the Pondicherry Government would follow suit, Mr. Valsaraj said that any step beneficial to the students should be adopted.

He said that the Cabinet might shortly take a decision on the matter.

Mr. Valsaraj said that there was little possibility of the proposed State Government-run medical college to start functioning in 2006-2007 as was expected earlier.

He said building for the college and the hospital attached to it were yet to be ready.

Asked about the possible alliance for the coming Assembly polls, he said whether there was alliance or not the Congress would emerge victorious again. He said the government record in the last five years was sufficient for the people to make their assessment regarding the Congress' capabilities.

Mr. Valsaraj said that there was little possibility for the proposed State Government run medical college to start functioning during 2006-2007 academic year as was expected earlier.

He said the building for the college and also its attachment hospital had got to be ready.

Mr.Valarasaj, who is also in charge of Department of Economics and Statistics, earlier released the publications of the department, `Pondicherry at a glance-2005` and `Abstract of Statistics of Pondicherry: 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.'

Secretary the government A.K. Singh received the first copies of the documents.

Data on basic indicators

Mr.Valsaraj told newsmen after releasing the publications that latest data on important and basic indicators of the economy of the Union Territory contained in the publications. They would also be of help to project macro economic analysis of various sectors of Pondicherry..

The Director of the Department Vaithianathan said that the abstract of statistics would enable the formulation of plan schemes for development of Pondicherry.

Mr.Valsaraj said that the department had also brought out sixteen other various publications covering different sectors of economy.

The first edition of the abstract of statistics was published in 1958 edition. The statistics project data on socio economic characteristics of the Union Territory including area, population, agriculture, irrigation, animal husbandry, power, industry, education, prices and State income among other areas.
