BELLARY: Deputy Chief Minister and district in charge M.P. Prakash has criticised some departments for their alleged laxity in implementing government programmes.

Presiding over a review meeting of the Karnataka 20-point programme here on Tuesday, Mr. Prakash said the achievements of the Horticulture, Agriculture, National Highway, Kannada and Culture, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare departments are far from satisfactory.

He pulled up officials of the departments for not taking interest in implementing government programmes. He warned erring officials of disciplinary action.

Mr. Prakash took the Assistant Executive Engineer of the National Highway Department to task for not taking steps to get NH 13 and NH 63 repaired.

"I had instructed the department to take up repair works on the two roads two months ago. But the two national highways are in an awful condition," he said.

Mr. Prakash, while taking exception to the delay in distributing cows to beneficiaries, though funds have been released and the list of beneficiaries is ready, warned the Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department officials that they will be held responsible if the cows are not handed over immediately.

    G. Karunakar Reddy, MP, said review meetings should be held periodically, and urged the Deputy Chief Minister to ensure that they are held as scheduled.

With regard to getting school uniforms stitched under the Vidya Vikas Yojane, Mr. Prakash suggested that the work be entrusted to women's self-help groups (SHGs) and to those who have undergone tailoring courses.
