Singapore Airlines forecasts more passenger traffic

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Having recorded a 15-20 per cent growth in the Indian sector alone in 2005, Singapore Airlines sees a burgeoning of passenger traffic and a consequent need to build capacity at least in Chennai and New Delhi.

The company, now operating in all the key metros and two secondary markets, forecasts increased traffic in the coming years, B.K. Ong, general manager, India, told presspersons on Wednesday.

As part of its own capacity building, Singapore Airlines added two flights to the existing three in the Bangalore sector. It also took over the Hyderabad flights from Silkair, establishing its presence in eight cities in the country, with 56 flights every week.

This included the two in the secondary market: Amritsar and Ahmedabad. The company, however, could operate in 18 secondary markets, Mr.Ong said. The customer profile was a healthy mix of corporates, holidayers, those visiting friends and relatives and transit passengers.
