BIRMINGHAM : Defending champion Chen Hong reached the second round of the men's singles at the All-England Open badminton championships on Wednesday. The seventh-seeded Chinese, also the 2002 champion, needed 34 minutes to beat Yousuke Nakanishi of Japan 15-8, 15-7 as the last major tournament played under the traditional scoring system opened with a 96-match programme.
There were no upsets in the early singles matches as the Asian players looked strong. Yeoh Kay Bin of Malaysia became the first opening-day winner when he beat Ukrainian qualifier Vladislav Druzchenko 15-7, 15-7 in 37 minutes.
