Anand draws, Topalov catches up

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand agreed to a 15-move draw with Ivan Sokolov before being joined in the lead by World Champion Veselin Topalov after four rounds of the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee, near Amsterdam, on Tuesday.

Anand, playing with black pieces for the third time, chose not to take any chances in this Queen's Gambit Declined game. The result raised Anand's tally to three points where he soon found company of Topalov, who crushed Dutch Loek van Wely for his third victory.

The results (fourth round): Ivan Sokolov (Ned, 1.5) drew with V. Anand (3); Peter Leko (Hun, 2) drew with Vassily Ivanchuk (2.5); Gata Kamsky (USA, 1) lost to Levon Aronian (Arm, 2); Michael Adams (Eng, 2) drew with Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 2); Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 1.5) lost to Boris Gelfand (Isr, 2.5); Loek van Wely (Ned, 1.5) lost to Veselin Topalov (Bul, 3); Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azr, 2) drew with Sergey Tiviakov (Ned, 1.5).
