Alexei Fedorov in sole lead

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Plenty of grit and a slice of luck combined to take 12-year-old Parimarjan Negi to a creditable draw against a slightly unwell fifth seed Abhijit Kunte before top seed Alexei Fedorov raced away with the sole lead with his sixth straight victory in the Parsvnath International Open chess tournament here on Wednesday.

On a day when six of the top-10 boards ended with honours even, National `A' qualifier Diwakar Prasad Singh upstaged seventh seeded Kazakh GM Nurlan Ibraev, that too, with black pieces to join the pack of 16 players sharing the second spot with five points. Fedorov needed 61 moves to down Uzbek Marat Dzhumaev to lead with six points.

Himanshu impresses

Himanshu Sharma continued his fine run by holding second seed Surya Shekhar Ganguly in 23 moves and joined Diwakar and Negi in the hunt for a GM norm. In fact, Himanshu and Diwakar, along with M. Vinoth Kumar, are within striking distance of an International Master norm. The day's other surprise results include Saptarshi Roy's 23-move checkmate of 10th seeded S. Kidambi after sacrificing two minor pieces and Rishipal Singh's triumph over higher rated K. Ratnakaran.
