THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There was joy and heartbreak for Shikha Tandon, but Rehan Poncha continued his gold hunt in the all-India inter-university aquatic championships at the Water Works Swimming Pool here on Wednesday.

On the third day, Rehan Poncha of Bangalore set two meet records to raise his total tally of the meet to six. Rehan's record-breaking efforts came in 1500m freestyle (17.21.99s) and 200m individual medley (2:15.09).

Shikha Tandon of Bangalore came within a whisker of breaking Anita Sood's 21-year-old record in the women's 400m freestyle. Shikha finished the event in 4:49.5 seconds to narrowly miss out on Anita's record (4:49.10s) set in 1985.

She, however, had enough reasons to smile as she broke the record in 200m individual medley by clocking 2:35.49s. Ambica Iyengar had set the record (2:37.55) in 2004.

There was some cheer for the universities from Kerala in the relay. Kerala University won the men's 4x100m freestyle, while Calicut University took gold in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay event. In diving, Pratha Kshisagar, of Devi Ahaliya, completed double by winning the high board and springboard events. Tushar Gitaye (Mumbai) took gold in the men's high board diving.
