VISAKHAPATNAM: Host Paradip moved into the semifinal knockout stage of the all-India major ports football tournament, beating Chennai 1-0 in its last league match on Wednesday. Kedar Nayak scored the winner. Paradip meets Kolkata in the semifinal. Cochin moved up thanks to a better goal average after being held goalless by Tuticorin. It will face Murmugao in the knockout phase. Murmugao beat Visakhapatnam 5-0. M. Monteivo (2), F. Periera, V. Padnekar and M. Dhond slotted the goals.
Big win for Bullayya
Dr. L. Bullayya College defeated PRISM College by eight wickets in the inaugural match of the Vidyaardhi Decennial Trophy inter-college cricket tournament at the AU ground here on Wednesday. The scores: PRISM College 88 for five in 16 overs bt Dr. L. Bullayya College 89 for two. Gayatri Vidya Parishad Degree College 123 for three (Hemanth 54) bt Pydah College 87. T.S.R. and T.B.K. College 107 for eight bt Vidyaardhi Degree College 73 for five.
Match ends in tie
VDCA first division institutional league match between East Coast Railway Sports Association and Visakhapatnam Port Sports Council ended in an exciting tie on Wednesday.
The scores: ECRSA 192 in 49.2 overs (K. Kumaraswamy 49, M.N. Vikram Varma 45, S.A. Ramkishore 42, P. Jaykumar six for 57) tied with VPSC 192 for nine in 50 overs (H. Vatekar 65). Fifth division: Graduates CC 284 for nine in 50 overs (Uma Mahesh 66, Sameer 44, D.V. Ramakrishna 41) bt Professionals CC 192 in 39 overs (Shyam 60, D.V. Ramakrishna five for 42, Ganesh five for 68).

Tennis doubles event
IBP Century Club is organising the Ramki Trophy Republic Day tennis doubles tournament in Visakhapatnam from Jan. 22 to 25. The events are men's open doubles and also 100 plus and 120 plus events (in which the total age of the two players must be above 100 and 120 respectively). Entries close on Jan. 20 and must be sent to the sports secretary of the club, P.K. Kishore.
