TIRUNELVELI: Manonmaniam Sundaranar will host the 66th all-India inter-university athletic meet at the St. John's College (Palayamkottai) from January 30. Over 3,000 athletes from 150 universities across the country are expected to take part in the five-day meet to be held under floodlights. The meet will be inaugurated by the MS Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Cynthia Pandian. "The glittering inaugural function, to be embellished by variety entertainment by school and college students, and a dazzling fireworks display by Standard Fireworks (Sivakasi) would be witnessed by star athletes like P.T. Usha, Beenamol, Anju Bobby George and Shiny Wilson," Dr. Cynthia told mediapersons here on Wednesday. A team of 150 officials, led by the Asian Technical Delegate C.K. Valson, will conduct 25 events for the boys, while the girls will compete in 24 events (except pole vault), which would be displayed on a mega screen to be installed by a Delhi-based company. Photo-finish cameras would be in place for the first time in the inter-varsity meet. Record-breaking efforts would be rewarded with Rs. 5000, courtesy the Vijayawada-based CBR Sports Foundation.
