EAMCET, ECET convenors

HYDERABAD: L.V.A.R. Sarma of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) has been appointed as Convenor, EAMCET-2006 while K. Govindarajulu has been appointed as Convenor ECET-2006.

Prof. Sarma, from the Department of Computer Science, JNTU has been the Convenor from 2002. Prof. Govindarajulu, who is presently Director, Evaluation, JNTU will handle ECET-2006 that is conducted for admissions into polytechnic courses in the State. — Staff Reporter

Naxals blast boats

GUNTUR: The Communist Party of India (Maoist) naxalites killed the driver of a mechanised boat and blasted three fishing boats in the Krishna Venldurthi mandal of Guntur district on Tuesday.

The driver was identified as Venkaiah, a native of Sirigiripadu of Veldurthi mandal. — Staff Reporter

Constable injured

as gun goes off

KURNOOL: A constable, Raghavendra, was injured when an AK 47 rifle went off accidentally at Atmakur in Kurnool district on Wednesday. He was examining the rifle of a special party constable when it went off and pierced his thigh. — Staff Reporter

Fisherman drowned

Kakinada: A fisherman, Arjiti Nookabbai (32), drowned in the sea after he fell from a country boat on Wednesday. His body was sent for post-mortem. — Correspondent

Activist seeks talks

Hyderabad: A social activist, Lavanam, has expressed desire to talk to the Government in a bid to end the naxalite problem in the State. He released here on Wednesday an open letter to public representatives to facilitate his meeting with the Government in this regard. Lavanam said his attempt to talk to Naxalite leaders yielded good results. — Special Correspondent

Virasam's protest

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Revolutionary Writers' Association (Virasam) has criticised the Government for not dropping the cases against its leaders, Varavara Rao and G. Kalyan Rao, despite lifting the ban on the organisation two months ago. — Special Correspondent

Arrest of MTRS workers alleged

HYDERABAD: The Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti, headed by Krupakar Madiga and CPI (ML-New Democracy) said that MRPS activists in Mahabubnagar, Srikakulam and East Godavari districts were arrested on Wednesday while they were proceeding to Hyderabad to attend a rally on January 20. Demanding the release of the arrested persons, he said that the organisation would go ahead with the rally despite the repressive measures. — Special Correspondent

Life term for murder

ELURU: The District Judge K. Sanjivarao Naidu on Wednesday sentenced N. Rajendraprasad of Kalvacharla in West Godavari district to undergo life imprisonment coupled with a fine of Rs 1,000 for killing his wife. According to the prosecution, he killed his wife Gangaratnam suspecting her fidelity in 2003. — Staff Reporter

Temple priest dead

TIRUPATI: Venkanna Gurukal (70), the chief priest of the famous Vayulingeswara temple at Srikalahasti, breathed his last on Wednesday. The Gurukal was a retired judicial officer. He is survived by wife and two daughters. — Staff Reporter

`Work to rule' stir by revenue staff

KADAPA: Over 800 revenue employees from the cadre of attender to tahsildars launched work to rule protest in Kadapa district on Wednesday. The revenue officials wound up their work at 5 p.m. in the Collectorate, RDO and MRO offices all over the district. They would continue the protest till February 7. If the Government did not concede their demands, an indefinite strike would be launched from February 7 midnight, the Revenue Association leaders said.

NCC cadets donate blood

KURNOOL: Four NCC cadets of Government Degree College here donated blood to poor patients on Tuesday and Wednesday. A four-year-old boy who was run over by a bullock cart needed AB positive blood for an emergency operation. On request, the NCC officers deputed the cadets for donation. Also, two more women in critical condition received blood from the NCC cadets.

Employment scheme in Chittoor from Feb. 2

CHITTOOR: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is a boon for unskilled and unemployed labourers in rural areas, district Collector S.S. Rawath said. Addressing an `awareness sadassu' on national rural employment guarantee programme here on Wednesday, he explained about the programme and its implementation. Chittoor was one among the 13 districts in the State selected for the implementation of the programme from February 2 at a cost of Rs.100 crores. - Correspondent

Jailed for bid to molest woman

Nellore: The Principal Assistant Sessions Judge, Nellore, S. Nagarjuna, has on Tuesday, convicted R. Seshaiah, for 3 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 448 of IPC and 5 years RI besides penalising him Rs. 100, under Section 354 of IPC, which are to run concurrently. Seshaiah, a native of Mandapam village of T.P. Gudur mandal on August 16, 2004, barged into the house of a woman of the same village when she was alone and attempted to violate her modesty. He however, escaped when the woman raised an alarm. - Staff Reporter

Collector inaugurates

Kakinada: East Godavari Collector Anil Kumar Singhal inaugurated two community halls while Peddapuram MLA Thota Gopalakrishna inaugurated the cement roads and drains, costing Rs. 86.68 lakhs, in Samalkot Municipality on Tuesday. Later, addressing a function on the occasion, the Collector said that Indiramma Pathakam came as a boon as the required basic infrastructure could be developed in a phased programme in all the wards and the villages by 2008. - Correspondent

Move condemned

VIZIANAGARAM: The district unit of Mala Mahanadu has condemned support to SC categorisation by the Ministry of Social Justice, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India and also the threatening call to obstruct AICC plenary by Manda Krishna Madiga of Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti and demanded the Government to drop the categorisation issue keeping National SC/ST Commission and Supreme Court verdict in the past in view. District president of Mala Mahanadu Ramavarapu Pydiraju and State general secretary of Relli Kula Samkshema Sangam Somu Rambabu appealed to Mala Mahanadu members to participate in the "Chalo Hyderabad'' rally to be taken out in Hyderabad on January 21 in large numbers. - Correspondent

DGCA team inspects Madhurapudi airport

Rajahmundry: The Representatives of Airport Authority of India, Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Bureau of Security, Civil Aviation on Tuesday inspected Madhurapudi airport for according clearance to operate commercial flights. Mr. Gowrisanker, Bureau of Security, Civil Aviation and DGCA representative Beer Sing along with AAIs's representative spent more than two hours in Madhurapudi. They inspected the airstrip, runway, control room, fueling facility system, space for commercial booking counters, technical and security aspects of the airport. - Staff Reporter

Day-long programmes

Rajahmundry: The Official Language Committee is going to organise day-long programmes on Thursday in Anam Kala Kendram. The committee's president and district Collector in a statement on Wednesday said that the first session on `Telugu Language and its understanding' will be presided over by ABK Prasad, president of state official language committee and J. Ramamohana Rao, Minister and other officials and non-officials would attend. Professor Rachapalem Chandrasekhara Reddy would speak on `Why Telugu?' and literary personality Kaluva Malliah and others will speak on Telugu language's importance. - Staff Reporter

Six students take ill

Srikakulam: Six students — two girls and four boys — of Upper Primary School in Bairavanipalem in Garam mandal fell ill after taking mid-day meal on Wednesday. All the six started vomiting after consuming food.

They were taken to the Primary Health Centre in Gara and after treatment, were sent back to their homes. - Special Correspondent
