LUDHIANA: To boost production and export of potatoes, fruits and vegetables in the State, Punjab State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited (MARKFED) will set up an integrated multi-utility cold storage-cum-pack house costing Rs. 8.46 crore at Dhandari Kalan here. Agricultural and Processed Food Production Export Development Authority (APEDA) will also disburse a grant of Rs. 2.81 crore for the facility, State Cooperation and Horticulture Minister Jasjit Randhawa said here on Tuesday. ``The cold storage will have two chambers of 1000 MT for potato crop and one chamber of 500 MT for fruit and vegetables. Besides, there will also be grading lines for potatoes and a shrink wrap unit for other vegetables,'' the Minister said. He said the initiative, a part of the Agri Export Zone (AEZ) would boost the State's production and export of fruits and vegetables. The storage would be made operational within 180 days with road and rail connectivity. The top five vegetable crops in Punjab includes potato, root crops, tomato, cucurbits and onion with potatoes constituting over 60 per cent of the total vegetable production, Mr. Randhawa added.- PTI
