Scribe passes away

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Senior journalist and freedom fighter Suraj Prakash Papa died here on Wednesday morning. He was 86.

Papa, who underwent jail for his involvement in the March 1943 serial bomb explosions in Jodhpur, was president of the Rajasthan Swatantra Sangram Senani Samiti at the time of the death.

Inspired by the call for "Karo ya maro" (do or die) during the freedom movement, Papa had been operating underground for several months. It is said that the appendage "Papa" was added to his name to make it appear to the British authorities that he was an elderly person. Papa, who started the newspaper "Roshni" from Jodhpur in the post-Independence period, moved later to the State capital and launched "Naya Rajasthan".
