Indore situation under control; probe ordered

Staff Correspondent

Altercation between two groups had led to a violent clash

INDORE: The situation here was described as under control on Wednesday after an altercation between two groups that led to a violent clash between members of two communities on Tuesday and the police were forced to fire a few rounds in the air to disperse the agitated mob besides registering a complaint against local Congress MLA Ashwin Joshi under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code.

Indore Inspector-General of Police Shailendra Shrivastava told The Hindu on Wednesday that the situation was under control and investigations into the incident were on.

What had sparked Tuesday's violent protest was an altercation over a roadside wall being used as a public urinal. Inquiries revealed that the supporters of one Nanda Bai, who has considerable muscle power in the North Toda neighbourhood populated mainly by the Bagdi community, had got the road-facing wall painted with a message. Nanda Bai was earlier a Congress worker but had recently shifted loyalties to the BJP. It is learnt that on Monday night someone from the minority community living in the neighbouring South Toda area protested and urinated on a medical shop owner's car parked nearby. This led to an altercation between the two groups. On Tuesday morning the local BJP and Congress leaders began protesting on Jawahar Marg and the situation went out of control.

At this juncture, the police fired in the air and took to lathi-charge to disperse the mob. This was followed by the BJP workers resorting to a road blockade. They also damaged furniture inside the Central Kotwali police station.

They were demanding registration of a case against the Congress MLA, Ashwin Joshi. They alleged that he had attacked the local BJP office-bearer Kamal Baghel.
