IN A PENSIVE MOOD: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar holding a meeting with the State IPS officers to review law and order situation, in Patna on Wednesday.

Patna: Asking the police top brass to be `result-oriented', Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday called for ensuring a hike in the conviction rate of criminals for checking unlawful activities in the State.

The Chief Minister had summoned senior police officials to review the situation and evolve a strategy to curb criminal activities.

All zonal IGs and range DIGs and SPs participated in the meeting with figures of crime of different nature in their respective regions.

Briefing medipersons after the meeting, Bihar Director General of Police Ashish Ranjan Sinha said that the State Government had promised to solve problems of the police force through appropriate steps.

He said special emphasis was made in the meeting on improving conviction rates as criminals, who went free on bail, also used to commit various types of unlawful activities. He said the government would also make fund available to the police forces for bringing an improvement in their functioning.

Sinha and Additional Director General of Police (headquarters) Abhyanand told reporters that the CM asked the police to establish ```superiority' over criminals by adopting pro-active approach. The CM told the policemen to be a partner in the Government's development efforts by providing security to people engaged in developmental activities. He laid special emphasis on providing security to the staff of central agencies executing the East-West corridor mega road project and other schemes.

Nitish Kumar, who has often stressed crime control as a prerequisite for State's economic progress, is facing fire from the Opposition and public disappointment over the spiralling crime graph, despite the Government giving a `free hand' to the police to deal with the situation.

It may be recalled that Kumar had promised to make Bihar `crime-free' by January 24.

This was Kumar's third review meeting with top police officers after two earlier meetings during which the DGP, ADGs and IGs posted at the police headquarters had made presentations before the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, kidnapped class IX student of the Don Bosco Public School Nirmalendu Prakash Diwakar remained traceless for the second day on Wednesday, although raids continued at many places of Patna district for his safe recovery, police said.

Senior Police Superintendent Kundan Krishnan said efforts were on to rescue Nirmalendu from the clutches of kidnappers.

Fifteen-year-old Nirmalendu, son of a former director of the Bihar Animal Husbandry Department and fodder scam accused Dr O.P. Diwakar, was kidnapped from Harnichak here while he was going to his school in his car yesterday.

The kidnapping of Nirmalendu alias Bunty occurred less than a fortnight after the abduction of a businessman Prashant Jain in the State capital, sending shockwaves across the State.

Prashant Jain, a garment shop owner, was freed by his kidnappers on the Mahatma Gandhi setu, near here yesterday following heavy police pressure, police said.

All entry and exit points of the State capital have been sealed and intensive combing operations launched to recover the boy after alerting Police Stations.

Meanwhile, the principal, teachers and students of the Don Bosco Public School held a prayer meeting in the school premises for early recovery of Nirmalendu. PTI & UNI
