BANGALORE: The much awaited work on improving the 26 km Bangalore-Attibele stretch of Hosur Road, including the construction of the nine km elevated expressway, will be taken up by the National Highway Authority of India in the first week of February. Speaking to presspersons after chairing a review meeting of the work by NHAI and his ministry, Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa said tenders for the work have been opened and the construction work will begin next month. Mr. Muniyappa said that after he took over as Minister, road construction work estimated at Rs. 3,200 crores have either been taken up or will begin in the State. The detailed project reports have been initiated in some. The detailed project report on the Rs. 670-crore 163-km Nelamangala-Hassan highway will be completed shortly and immediately thereafter the tenders will be called. The 81-km Bangalore-Kolar-Mulbagal highway with a six-lane stretch up to Hoskote at a cost of Rs. 530 crores will be taken up and the detailed project report (DPR) is ready. The stretch from Hoskote to Kolar will be four-lane and tenders have been invited. Tenders will be invited for taking up work on upgrading the 24-km Bangalore-Nelamangala stretch with 4 km of elevated expressway. The estimated cost is Rs. 343 crores. The project for the 70-km Suratkal-Kundapur stretch is in progress and that on the 200-km Bijapur-Hospet route will be initiated next month. The project for the 84-km Goa-Belgaum on NH 4A is under progress.
Four-laning of road
Mr. Muniyappa said that four-laning of the 17-km stretch on NH17 from Mangalore to Edapally in Kerala will be taken up in the next few years. In Karnataka, the NHAI is taking up development of 7,655 km and has proposed to widen 90 km this year, apart from maintaining the national highways. Of the 27 districts, 25 are connected by national highways. It has been decided to take up a feasibility study of building bypasses to Hubli, Kanakapura, Hospet, Bellary, Moodabidri and Tiptur and the works would be taken up immediately after the study is completed. The Minister said that under Phase 3A of the NHD project, 4,000 km of 10,000 km roads will be developed to provide connectivity between New Delhi and the State capitals. Of 4,000 km, 457 km will be in Karnataka and the detailed project reports are under various stages. The stretches in Karnataka will be developed into four-lane roads.
