CHENNAI: The Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for a vehicular subway at Villivakkam Railway Yard (West). The subway will replace a manned level crossing. Over 12 lakh vehicles pass through the crossing everyday. Mr. Velu said railway subways or overbridges were necessary at level crossings, where one lakh vehicles pass through everyday. Villivakkam MLA D. Napolean and representatives of residents welfare associations said it was a long pending demand. Several motorists from Red Hills and the western suburbs passed through the stretch. Traffic jams were common during peak hours. The Rs.11-crore project will be taken up on a 50:50 cost-sharing arrangement between the Railways and the Chennai Corporation. Work for the 18-month project will commence in four months. Mr. Velu said four more road overbridges would come up this year in the city. He told North Chennai MP C. Kuppusami that pending projects at Kathivakkam-Cochrane Basin Road Level Crossing 1, Korrukupet Level Crossing, Villivakkam Level Crossing 1 and Jones Road Level Crossing near Stanley Medical College would also be taken up.
Box-pushing technology
The Villivakkam LC2 subway would be constructed using the box-pushing technology, utilised recently by the Highways Department for pedestrian subways at Tambaram and Alandur.
