MADURAI: Teachers working on consolidated pay in aided schools in Melur educational district will now receive summer vacation salary, thanks to a decision taken by officials in School Education Department here. Though teachers in the same grade elsewhere had been receiving monthly salary during the vacation, in Melur it was a different case due to `local interpretation' of a Government Order that caused the delay till now. However, the department felt that the teachers working on consolidated pay too should be given salary in vacation period and a communication is being sent to the school managements to this effect, according to officials in the Education Department. Representatives from the Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachers' Association here met the Chief Educational Officer, K. Sridevi, and urged her to look into the issue, stating that "there cannot be two sets of rules for the same grade teachers."
Summer holidays
S. Bhaskaran, association secretary, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the teachers were not paid salary during summer holidays for two years. "We want to help the teachers in both junior grade/post-graduate level in aided schools and when there is a G.O. being implemented in other districts, Melur cannot be an exception," he said. The CEO had asked the District Educational Officer, Melur, to ensure that the consolidated pay scale teachers in aided schools received their salary, Mr. Bhaskaran said. According to the association president, M. Xavier, the department has been urged to persuade the aided schools to pay arrears also for these teachers. The decision will benefit teachers working in over 30 aided schools in Melur educational district.
