This Day That Age
Tengku (Prince) Abdul Rahman, Chief Minister of Malaya, has asked the British Government to declare independence within the Commonwealth for the great rubber and tin colony. The Prince was making his opening speech at a conference which began on January 18 in London between Britain and leaders of the Malayan Federation to discuss the colony's constitutional future. He said, "There is no intention on our part to sever from the Commonwealth. We want to be an equal partner of the Commonwealth, but with more freedom to manage our own affairs." Tengku Abdul Rahman and his delegation are asking Britain for self-government immediately and complete independence within the Commonwealth some time next year.
