WASHINGTON: Over 3,200 persons are still officially listed as missing nearly five months after Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast region in late August last year, local media reported on Wednesday. The Find Family National Call Center, a center run by federal and state workers, received reports of some 11,500 persons missing after Katrina hit the southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on Aug. 29. More than 1,300 persons, most of them from Louisiana, were killed in the disastrous storm and about 1 million others were displaced. As of Wednesday, more than 3,200 still remained accounted for, the call center was cited as saying. Some of those missing might have been washed into Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans or their bodies remained in the rubble that blanketed the city. Xinhua
