Pulivendula sub-jail officials suspended

KADAPA: Pulivendula sub-jail Superintendent V. Srinu Naik and head warder Venkatasubbaiah were suspended in connection with the escape of a remand prisoner. The prisoner, Someswara Reddy, who was taken to Pulivendula area hospital due to ill health on January 12, gave the slip to the head warder Venkatasubbaiah and escaped. — Staff Reporter

Moddu Sreenu treated for eye ailment

ANANTAPUR: An accused in the Paritala Ravindra and Tagarakunta Prabhakar murder cases, Julakanti Srinivasa Reddy alias Moddu Sreenu, was brought to the General Hospital here on Thursday for an eye check up. He was later taken back to the sub-jail at Reddypalli near here amid tight security. — Staff Reporter

Torture of ABVP activists alleged

NIZAMABAD : BJP and ABVP activists staged a dharna in front of the Collector's chamber protesting against the alleged torture of some ABVP workers by the police in connection with the alleged assault on Pastor Aharon here on Thursday.

They alleged that the accused were illegally detained for more than five days and subjected to electric shocks. — Staff Reporter

CPI(M) State meet on February 11

TIRUPATI: Top leaders the CPI(M) from the national and the State committees are expected to attend the two-day State convention of the party to get under way at Tirupati on February 11. Two observation home escapees arrested

NIZAMABAD: Out of the four boys who escaped from the Government Observation Home here late on Wednesday night, two have been arrested, according to Rural Sub-Inspector S. Purushotham.

He said Nagesh was arrested and produced before the court and Dattu was in police custody. — Staff Reporter

Narrow escape for bus passengers

KURNOOL: Fifty passengers of a Hyderabad-bound APSRTC bus had a miraculous escape when the vehicle went off the road in the ghat section near the Srisailam dam on Thursday. According to reports, while negotiating a steep curve on the ghat road, the bus hit and smashed the parapet wall and was precariously balanced on the rear wheels while the front wheels were hanging in the air, Sub-Inspector Venugopal Reddy said.

Woman kidnapped

NANDYAL: A 20-year-old woman, Soumya, was allegedly kidnapped by a gang at Nandyal two days ago. A complaint was lodged with the police by her relatives that one Timma Reddy and three others allegedly kidnapped her when she went to a temple. The police are investigating. — Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Eastern Naval Command has launched a website www.pfr2006.nic.in on the President's Fleet Review scheduled for February 12 at Visakhapatnam. — Staff Reporter

IT raid on hospitals in Madanapalle

MADANAPALLE: The income tax officials raided corporate hospitals and houses of some doctors here on Wednesday. Four teams comprising 22 officers from Hyderabad conducted the raid with the assistance of local police. The properties of State Vidya Vidhan Parishad director Desai Thippa Reddy and owner of Satya Sai Hospital Anand Babu were also raided. The records of the hospital and some cash were seized.

Judge to unveil memorial pillar

KADAPA: High Court Judge G. Rohini will unveil a pillar to commemorate 125 years of District Munsif Court and the subordinate court at Proddatur on January 21. District and Sessions Judge M. Vijayalakshmi would preside over the function. Proddatur Bar Association President M. Konda Reddy and others will also take part in the function.- Staff Reporter

Heritage club set up in Kurnool college

KURNOOL: A heritage club was started at Government Degree College here on Thursday. Principal R.L. Narsaiah said the club was set up to create awareness among students by organising tours to historical sites, seminars and preparing heritage educational material. S. 300 workers join municipal union

ANANTAPUR: Some 300 municipal workers of Anantapur corporation and other municipalities in the district joined the Municipal Workers Union affiliated to Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) here on Thursday. A. Sairam and S. Jayachandra Naidu were elected President and Vice-President of the civic workers' body. Anantapur Mayor R. Parasuram, and others attended.- Staff Reporter

Man sentenced to life for murder

Nellore: The First Additional District and Sessions Judge, Nellore, E. Srinivasa Raju, on Thursday sentenced I. Bujjayya, to life imprisonment and levied a fine of Rs. 200. The accused belonging to Mangaladoruvu village of T.P. Gudur, was found guilty of killing one M. Kameswaraiah on the suspicion that he was having an illicit relationship with his (accused) sister-in-law. - Staff Reporter
