TUMKUR: The Lokayukta N. Venkatachala paid surprise visits to the General Hospital, Town Municipal Council office, taluk panchayat office, and offices of the Department of Revenue at Sira in Tumkur on Wednesday. He is on a nine-day visit to the district. People complained to him about officials and accused some of them of corruption and inefficiency.

At the hospital, Mr. Venkatachala pulled up a medical officer for his failure to furnish proper records. The Lokayukta found that medicines that had expired were being issued at the hospital.

Mr. Venkatachala was unhappy with the functioning of the Chief Officer of the Town Municipal Council.

An official at the sub-registrar's office was made to return Rs. 1,500 to a farmer, who alleged that the official had taken the money as bribe for issuing a land document.

The Lokayukta later received written complaints from the public. He ordered on-the-spot redressal of grievances in several cases and allotted time for officials to solve other problems.

Mr. Venkatachala reprimanded a medical officer at the Koratagere General Hospital for poor maintenance of the unit. He expressed dissatisfaction over the poor sanitation in the hospital. Disposable syringes were not being used and in some cases the syringes were being reused without being properly sterilised.

Mr. Venkatachala will visit the C.N. Halli taluk on Thursday. He will inspect offices at C.N. Halli town in the morning and meet people at Samudaya Bhavan in the afternoon.
