Letter to Manmohan on custodial death of worker
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention in a case relating to the arrest of a worker from Tamil Nadu and his eventual death in unknown circumstances while in police custody in Singapore.
In a letter to Mr. Singh, she said 36-year-old K.Paramasivam belonged to Paraiammapatti village in Madurai district and was reported to have died in a Singapore prison around January 6.
According to media reports, Paramasivam had gone there for employment 18 months ago and lost his passport and other travel documents.
Suspicious circumstances
He was taken into custody and lodged in prison where he was found dead under "suspicious circumstances."
Said Ms. Jayalalithaa: "It is also not known as to what happened to the mortal remains of Paramasivam. This has naturally upset the members of his family and his village greatly."
She urged Mr. Singh to take up the matter with the Singapore Government, through the Indian High Commission in Singapore, to unravel the circumstances leading to Paramasivam's arrest and death.
"It should be ensured that the Singapore Government pays adequate compensation to the family of Paramasivam for his death in custody in the prime of his youth," she added.
