Shahabuddin granted bail
After hearing arguments of both sides, Justice Mridula Sinha granted bail to Mohammed Shahabuddin. The police had recovered foreign-made firearms, foreign currency and other incriminating materials during raids at the MP's house under Hussainganj police station area in Siwan district on April 24, 2005. Mr Shahabuddin's counsel contended that the police had implicated his client in a false manner and recovery of firearms, currency and other materials were not made at the MP`s house but from that of an another villager, Jalaluddin. He is presently lodged in the Bhagalpur central jail.
Four get 10 years RI
Additional Session Judge P K Srivastava handed down the sentence to all the four accused. Three accused--Dinesh Chand Verma, Shiv Kanthpal and Ghanshyam Singh Senger -- were arrested at Shastri Bridge here by the officials of the Narcotics Control Bureau on April 21, 2003 with 15 kg heroin worth Rs 15 crore. They were delivering the heroin in a truck to one Ratan Malik in West Bengal.
12 tractors in Bihar
The naxalites chased away the labourers and other staff and set afire the tractors at Cherthu-Parbalpur village on Wednesday night, the police said, adding the contractor's refusal to pay extortion money to the naxalites could be the reason behind the attack. The work on the 19 km canal has been temporarily abandoned. There was no report of any injuries.
Six killed in mishap
The accident occured late on Wednesday night when Naib Tehsildar of Didihat, Keshav Dutt, and five others were returning to Pithoragarh after revenue collection in some villages, police said on Thursday. Senior police and administrative officials have rushed to the spot, they said adding that the cause of the accident was not immediately known.
NRI Urdu scholar
Prof Janak Pandey of Allahabad University will unveil the book of Dr Abidi, a Canadian of Indian origin. Justice Barkat Ali Zaidi, judge of Allahabad High Court, will be the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Abidi has so far written 15 books in Urdu. Kaynat-e-Najm -- his 15th literary work -- comprises 1,747 pages in two volumes.
