KHAMMAM: It was a cold day, but still thousands made their way to the Taruni Haat, making the Stambhari Sambaralu - the festival of Khammam - a big draw. A host of activities organised as part of the festival made it a show of fabulous entertainment.

The festival as well as the venue gained in popularity, as it was the second year in a row that the event was organised by the administration as part of the tourism promotion drive.

The Taruni Haat, which had almost every shutter downed for many months now, came up alive with the festival. Over 100 stalls put up by DWCRA groups had a rare collection of handicrafts on display. The paintings on rosewood frames, plastic inlay works and wood settings put up on display by Shilpa Creations of Mysore, major exporters of handicrafts, turned out to be a major attraction for visitors.

So was the case with the handicrafts from DWCRA groups from within the district.

    Capacity crowd

Electronic goods and computers of noted brands such as HCL, Toshiba, WIOPRO and LG filled the stands on one of the nine blocks in the venue and block was packed to capacity till late in the night. The paper cups manufactured by the self-help groups in different villages in the district and the home made snacks and pickles from the women's groups had the buyers standing in long queues. Children enjoyed the numerous rides and games in the kids' zone where a nominal entry fee was collected to prevent overcrowding.

    Fireworks

A splendid display of fireworks lit the skies and caught the attention of people in the whole town and villages in the suburbs. In all, 17 cultural troupes took part in the cultural rally organised on the occasion.
