Thippanna seeks official status for group

Special Correspondent

He has written to the Speaker

BANGALORE: The Janata Dal (Secular) group led by H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday appealed to Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna to recognise it as the official party group in the House.

In a letter to Mr. Krishna, Janata Dal (S) State unit President N. Thippanna, who has rallied behind Mr. Kumaraswamy, has said the JD(S) Legislature Party on Wednesday elected a new leader (Mr. Kumaraswamy) in place of Deputy Chief Minister M. P. Prakash. The latter was replaced following a demand for a change, Mr. Thippanna said.

Addressing presspersons, Mr. Thippanna said the Speaker gave no assurance to them.

Asked about Janata Dal (S) President H.D. Deve Gowda's letter to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi against taking cognisance of the letter withdrawing support to the Government, submitted by Mr. Kumaraswamy on Wednesday, Mr. Thippanna said: "Mr. Gowda's opinion is not important. It is the opinion of the legislators which should be considered and which is vital."

Mr. Prakash termed the development "most unfortunate". Many MLAs who supported Mr. Kumaraswamy will come back to the party and support the Dharam Singh Government, he claimed.
