CHENNAI: Weaves, wefts and warps in various hues and patterns are on display at Tantavi 2005-06, an exhibition at the Lalit Kala Akademi.

The exhibition, which will be on till January 23, features handloom fabrics and apparel designed and developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.

Tantavi features fabrics made from natural fibres such as cotton, wool, silk and jute.

It showcases a range of handloom fabrics, incorporating classic warp-weft combinations and modern qualities of convenience.

It aims to bring out the inherent strengths and qualities of traditional hand woven textiles.

The National Centre for Textile Design, a nodal agency of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, is organising Tantavi exhibitions all over the country, initially in select metro cities including New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

`Tantavi', a Sanskrit word meaning `of the loom,' is the registered trademark of the National Centre for Textile Design.

Themes

The first exhibition, Tantavi - 2001, based on 212 exclusive handloom fabrics on the theme `Structures', was organised in six metropolitan cities including Chennai between December 2001 and March 2002.

The second exhibition was based on patterned fabrics.

It displayed 193 exclusive handloom fabrics on the theme `Patterns', developed by 24 weavers' service centres.

The fabrics were produced in different textures and patterns using cotton, wool, silk, jute and linen in natural colour.

Tantavi-2005 is the third in the series and showcases 142 exclusive handloom fabrics developed by 24 weavers' service centres.
