Make public proposals submitted to U.S., says CPI(M)

Separation of civilian and military nuclear facilities

  • Political parties, Parliament and nuclear scientific community kept in the dark
  • Statement comes on a day when working group was meeting

NEW DELHI: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday demanded that the Government immediately make public the proposals submitted to the United States on separation of civilian and military nuclear facilities.

In a statement, it said: "It is surprising that on such a vital issue the Government has sought to keep political parties, Parliament and the nuclear scientific community in the dark."

Indian polity and intelligentsia remain in the dark on the proposals that had been circulated to members of the U.S. Senate, House of Representatives and think tanks.

"There is no information whether the U.S. is taking the steps it had to take as part of the reciprocal terms in the agreement. There are reports that the U.S. has set out further conditions and made new demands beyond the terms of the July 18, 2005 agreement arrived at when Prime Minister visited Washington," it noted.
