JOLLY RIDE: Ireland Prime Minister Bertie Ahern (third from left) during a ride on the Delhi Metro along with DMRC Managing Director E. Sreedharan in New Delhi on Thursday.
NEW DELHI : India and Ireland signed three agreements on cultural, scientific and technological cooperation on Thursday. One of the two agreements signed on Science and Technology was a memorandum of understanding between the Indian National Science Academy and the Science Foundation of Ireland. The visiting Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern held talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He called on President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Mr. Ahern, who also held discussions with Leader of the Opposition L. K. Advani, is scheduled to visit Mumbai. Staff Reporter writes: Mr. Ahern and his delegation visited the Delhi Metro and travelled on the state-of-the-art system to and from Central Secretariat to Rajiv Chowk.
The delegation was briefed about the progress of the Metro project by Managing Director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation E. Sreedharan. Since Ireland is also considering the possibility of having a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) for Dublin, which is quite densely populated, Mr. Sreedharan explained to the visiting dignitaries the construction techniques of the elevated Metro and the cost involved. The nodal agency for Metro development in the country, DMRC has been helping various cities in development of detailed project reports.
