BJP in Dakshina Kannada elated

Special Correspondent

`If the Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP share power, the coalition will last longer'

Leaders' statements
  • JD(S) and BJP had a clear mandate of people
  • JD(S) has realised the futility of its coalition with the Congress

MANGALORE: The BJP in Dakshina Kannada is delighted about the developments in Bangalore and its leaders here say that finally the district will have its own district minister.

The fact remains that the BJP has contributed seven MLAs from Dakshina Kannada and is a formidable force to reckon with. The President of the Dakshina Kannada BJP unit Pratap Simha Nayak told The Hindu that the party was watching intently the developments in Bangalore. He said that the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) has no conflict of interests in places where the BJP was in full strength and vice versa. And if the Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP share power, the new coalition will last longer than the one in peril now in the capital, he said.

Mr. Nayak stated that the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) had conflicts in many places as they both shared the same areas and regions of support. Senior BJP leader and member of the National Executive of the party Dr. V.S. Acharya told The Hindu on his way to Bangalore from Udupi that the Janata Dal (Secular) has now realised the futility of its coalition with the Congress as the Congress was rejected by the people in the 2004 elections. But the Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP had a clear mandate from people, Dr. Acharya said.

Senior BJP leader and district spokesperson Monappa Bhandary stated that when it comes to formation of the new government, there is no ignoring Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, as these two coastal districts have the largest number of MLAs.
