At least 55 persons were killed and five injured when a bus skidded off the road and fell into a 350-foot deep gorge in Rajouri district on Friday.
Rajouri Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abbas told The Hindu that the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a mini-bus near Sai Ganji. Most of the passengers in the bus, going from Darhal to Rajouri, died on the spot. Among the dead were eight women, one of them pregnant. The police and the Army assisted the district administration in extricating the bodies.
The police launched a manhunt for the bus driver, who fled the scene. The Additional District Magistrate would hold an inquiry into the accident. Mr. Abbas gave Rs. 5,000 each as immediate relief to the injured and recommended ex gratia for the kin of the deceased.
