Anup Sridhar felicitated

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Anup Sridhar, the newly crowned National badminton champion, was felicitated at a function organised by his sponsor, Ashaway, here on Thursday. Ashaway, the manufacturer of quality badminton equipments and apparels, which has been backing Anup since February 2005, presented him with a cheque of Rs. 1 lakh in appreciation of his winning the National title twice.

The executive director of Vijaya Bank, Aftab, who presented the cheque, wished the champion all success. Anup, while thanking the sponsors for their unstinted support, said that would be competing in the Danish league in Denmark but would return to India to play in the Thomas Cup preliminary rounds from February.14.

Anup said that though he had gained an entry into the main draw, he had to skip the all-England championship, as he fell sick after the senior Nationals here.

Anup dedicated his National triumph to his parents, who had sacrificed a great deal to ensure his growth in the game. He also thanked the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy and his mentors, Prakash Padukone and U. Vimal Kumar for making him one of the best players in the country. "Whatever I have learnt in the game, I owe it to them," he said.

Prakash, while complimenting Anup for his success, also cautioned that he should not rest on his laurels.

"He should not get carried away with such wins. This is only a beginning. I always stress on three Ds to my wards — discipline, determination and dedication — and Anup has these qualities in plenty. At 22, he has six to seven years of good badminton left in him. I want him to keep working hard and become one of the best players in the world," said Prakash.
