BELGAUM: The State unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has termed the ongoing economic reforms anti-people, anti-labour and inhuman and alleged that the Government is a mute spectator to the violation of labour laws in the State. The CITU, which will observe "Labour Rights Week" from January 25 to protest against the "anti-labour" policies of the Government, will also organise demonstrations and rallies in front of Labour Department offices on January 31. V.J.K. Nair, CITU State unit general secretary, told presspersons here on Wednesday that there were several instances of violation of labour laws and lack of protection to workers, though the State boasts to be the IT capital of the country. The rape and murder of Pratibha Srikantamurthy, who was working with HP, is an example of the lax security arrangements for women working in call centres, he added. He alleged that the Government is cutting down the interest rate on provident fund, which is unethical as the Government borrows frequently from the fund. Like banks, the lenders should have the right to fix the interest rate and not the borrower, he added. The pension regulatory scheme advocated by the Centre is bound to be a failure.
