Cartoons make readers think, says Khajapeer

Staff Correspondent

Dearth of young cartoonists highlighted at workshop

FOR A HEARTY LAUGH: Karnatak University Vice-Chancellor M. Khajapeer (right) at the cartoon exhibition in Dharwad on Friday.

HUBLI: Cartoons are an integral part of newspapers, said Karnatak University Vice-Chancellor M. Khajapeer here on Friday.

The Vice-Chancellor was inaugurating the three-day "State-level workshop for budding cartoonists" organised under the auspices of Karnataka Madhyama Academy, the university's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Karnataka State Cartoonists Association.

Of late, cartoons and caricatures had become a necessity for newspapers. Social, political, cultural, religious and general issues can be conveyed effectively through cartoons. Workshops for encouraging budding cartoonists should be held at regular intervals, he said.

A.S. Balasubramanyam, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, said cartoons alone can warn and criticise the action of any person without inciting feelings. They can be interpreted in many ways that make readers think, he said.

Award

Presiding over the function, Academy President V.N. Subbarao said the academy will institute an award from next year to encourage the young cartoonists.

About the contributions made by veteran cartoonists such as R.K. Laxman, Murthy, and Sriranga, he said there seemed to be a dearth of good cartoonists and young cartoonists needed encouragement.

Association president H.B. Manjunath made introductory remarks.

P.S. Parvati, Senior Assistant Director, Information Department, were present.

P.S. Hiremath, Senior Assistant Director, Information Department, proposed a vote of thanks.

Exhibition

A three-day exhibition of cartoons by various artistes has been arranged at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan on the university campus as part of the workshop.

Thirty young cartoonists from throughout the State are taking part in the workshop.
