Police, Maoists exchange fire

VISAKHAPATNAM : A police party and a dalam of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) exchanged fire near the forest area of Nelajarta village in G.K. Veedhi mandal on Thursday.

The naxalites escaped into the forest area after exchanging fire with the police.

A grenade, one Tapancha, seven bullets and some revolutionary literature were recovered by the police, according to Superintendent of Police V.V. Srinivasa Rao.-Special Correspondent

Students' distinction

WARANGAL : Four students, who formed part of a six-member team of ABV Government degree college, Jangaon, secured third place at the all India inter-university cultural competitions held at Kurukshetra University, Haryana.

College principal T.V. Shobha Rani said the students -- Rambabu, Shyamprasad, Yellaiah and Mallesham -- performed a tribal dance and won the distinction. - Staff Reporter

Rs. 10-lakh donation for TTD

TIRUPATI : Chennai-based private finance company chief M.R. Bharath on Friday donated Rs. 10 lakhs to the TTD.

Presenting a cheque for the amount to TTD Executive Officer A.P.V.N. Sarma, he requested that the sum be credited to the TTD's Pranadana Trust floated to provide superspeciality treatment free of cost to those falling under the BPL category.

The Lord also received another gift - a Chevrolet Tavera . The four-wheeler was donated to the temple by a Bangalore-based devotee Udayakumar.-Special Correspondent

Tragedy strikes family

KURNOOL : Tragedy struck a family at Gonegandla in Kurnool district on Friday.

According to reports, a woman, Nagamunemma, died while undergoing treatment in the hospital. When the family was taking home the body, the ambulance hit a tractor at K. Nagalapuram killing a person and causing injuries to three.

The woman's father-in-law Munaiah, 65, died. Her husband and brother sustained injuries.

More colleges likely

ELURU : K. Lakshminarayana, Director, Andhra Pradesh Collegiate Education, on Friday said the Government was contemplating expansion of colleges in the State as part of the endeavour to push up the rate of access to higher education.

Speaking at the valedictory of a two-day seminar on `quality assurance in institutions of higher learning-managing infrastructure and learning resources', he said a mid-term review indicated that the access rate was around 7 per cent only in the State when it was at 76 per cent in the United States and 50 per cent in Europe. - Staff Reporter

Boy rescued

Coimbatore: A 12-year-old boy from Andhra Pradesh, who was found roaming in the city railway station on Thursday, was rescued and handed over to a juvenile home.

According to the railway police, the boy, Rajasekhar, hailing from Kuttapalli, boarded the train from somewhere near his native place for `fun' on Wednesday night and got down in the city the next morning. The boy's father has already been informed, according to the sources. -PTI

Two girls drowned

NALGONDA : Two girls - Khairunnisa, 13, and Manjula, 15, -- were drowned in a pit on the outskirts of Devarakonda in Nalgonda district on Friday.

Devarakonda DSP Srinivas said that four girls went near the pit to wash clothes. While Khairunnisa, daughter of a lorry driver, and Manjula, daughter of a rural medical practitioner, were drowned. - Staff Reporter

Panchayat secretary in ACB net

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Friday arrested Panchayat Secretary of Banganapalli in Kurnool district, A. Siva Ramaiah, and office attender P.C. Obulesu, on charge of receiving Rs. 500 bribe from a complaint. Both the accused would be produced in the court of Additional Special Judge for ACB Cases in Hyderabad, a press release said. The Panchayat Secretary allegedly demanded the bribe for issuing a death certificate. After receiving the money, he handed it to the attender. Both tested positive when subjected to a chemical test. - Staff Reporter

BMR trust to conduct 1,000 eye surgeries

Nellore: Prominent aqua exporter and general secretary of district Telugu Desam Party Beeda Ravichandra, has said that the BMR Charitable Trust, will conduct 1,000 eye surgeries per year in Allur Assembly constituency. He told reporters that the trust had recently conducted a free mega camp at Iskapalli and treated more than 600 patients suffering from eye diseases. Similar camps will be held at Bogole mandal on January 29 and at Chennuru on February 12. - Staff Reporter

Vehicles seized

Nellore: The Transport Department officials seized four vehicles in Venkatagiri town for not possessing valid travel documents. The vehicles include two auto rickshaws and an equal number of tractors, which have been handed over to the local police station. Meanwhile, officials of Mining Department seized two lorries which were allegedly transporting lime from Pellakur mandal limits. The vehicles were on their way to Srikalahasti. - Staff Reporter

One killed as car rams into lorry

Nellore: One person was killed and three others were injured when a car rammed into a lorry on the national highway near Kadanutala of Bogole mandal on Friday. According to available information, the accident occurred when the car was on its way to Guntur from Karnataka and the deceased has been identified as Ravindra. - Staff Reporter

Police on the look out for TDP leader

ANANTAPUR: The district police are on the look out for TDP leader and Mandal Parishad President of Yellanur K. Pedda Reddy who allegedly hatched a conspiracy to eliminate two followers of Minister for Panchayat Raj and Endowments J.C. Diwakar Reddy.
