NEW DELHI: Describing the resignations of the four Congress MLAs from the Public Accounts Committee of the Delhi Assembly as a "political drama", the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Saket, Vijay Jolly, on Friday said it was a frustrated attempt by some of the members of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's group "to cover up corruption that took place during privatisation of the power sector in the Capital during 2002". In a statement, Mr. Jolly, who is also a member of the PAC that adopted the report on privatisation of power recently, said it was unfortunate that those in power were trying to adopt unscrupulous methods to sabotage the proceedings of a House Committee which amounts to virtually blocking the proceedings of the House. The PAC is like a "mini-House" and the conduct of the Congress MLAs led by former Power Minister Narendra Nath amounted to betrayal of the mandate given by the people of Delhi. "If they do not have anything to hide, then why are they bent upon blocking the passage of the report. The Chief Minister talks of an open and transparent government and then deputes her people to sabotage the working of democratic institutions making a farce of good governance. It is nothing but a clear attempt to hide the corruption that had taken place during the privatisation of power," he remarked. Mr. Jolly also alleged that these four MLAs had resigned after the Government came under pressure from the private power distribution companies. "What is most surprising that these MLAs did not resign the day the report was adopted or lodged their dissent but decided to act when everything had been wrapped up. I compliment PAC chairman S.C. Vats for having prepared such an exemplary report and bringing out the injustice done to the people of Delhi who continue to face power cuts and are at the receiving end at the hands of private discoms who are virtually having a free run. The members have sought to cast aspersions on Dr. Vats which is a serious matter and should be dealt accordingly." Mr. Jolly said the Congress party, its elected representatives and especially Ms. Dikshit owed an explanation to the people of Delhi for having failed in their bid to provide "power cut free" Delhi during the last almost three and half years of privatisation. "It is a big scam that should be probed in the light of the PAC report," he added.
