Staff Reporter

One of the main demands of students is removal of the principal

BANGALORE: About 10 persons, including students, suffered injuries when violence broke out during an agitation by students of Visveswarapuram College of Pharmacy here on Friday.

The police said the protesting students and representatives of the management clashed on the college premises on K.R. Road in Central police station limits.

Irate students allegedly went on a rampage and damaged the glass panes of the college building and ransacked the college office.

They smashed flowerpots, damaged furniture and indulged in stone throwing.

While the college management has lodged a complaint with the Central police against five students accusing them of indulging in violence, the students alleged that some outsiders hired by the management indulged in stone throwing and attacked the students.

As the situation was going out of control, the police reportedly resorted to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the 100-odd students, many of them hailing from other States.

According to the police, for the past 15 days the students have been urging the management to remove the principal Kalyana Prakasam, stating that he was very strict and was imposing heavy fines on them even for small mistakes.

The management, which had fulfilled some other demands of the students, had refused to change the principal.

On Friday, some representatives of the management came to the college and held discussions with the student union leaders to sort out the issue, the police said.

Following a heated discussion, the students and management representatives came to blows, the police said.

After the situation eased a little, the students staged a demonstration on the campus demanding action against the management representatives and sought the removal of the principal.

Later, the students, faculty members, the principal and the management representatives held a meeting and decided to settle the issue amicably, the police said.

Visveswarapuram College of Pharmacy, which is run by the Vokkaligara Sangha, offers diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses in pharmacy.
