Teachers not paid for work on poll roll revision

`They worked during summer holidays'

SALEM: Elementary school teachers in the Omalur block of Salem district have claimed that they had not been paid for the work with regard to the revision of electoral rolls in May during last year so far.

The teachers said that on instructions from the Election Commission (EC) they carried out the revision and correction in the electoral rolls in Omalur block in the district from May 10 to May 30, even sacrificing summer holidays. They had to be involved in the work from 9 am to 6 pm on all these days.

But despite repeated requests, they were yet to receive the wages . Instead of paying the wages, they were asked once again to work for the revision of electoral rolls from January 12 to January 27. This, according to the Tamil Nadu Asiriyar Kootani (Tamil Nadu Teachers' Association), had come as a rude shock to the teachers.

They said that the Election Commission had been spending crores of rupees on elections. But those teachers who worked for it had not been paid so far. The association, while submitting a memorandum to the Commission in this regard, had expressed its willingness to work for rolls' revision, if the Commission wished so, without pay.
