New CRPF battalion

NEW DELHI: Faced with increased threats from insurgent groups, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is raising a battalion exclusively for intelligence gathering and sharing.

"A battalion exclusively for intelligence gathering, comprising mostly of our new recruits from Jammu and Kashmir, is all ready and would be operational by February-end," CRPF Director-General J.K. Sinha told reporters here on Saturday.

Mr. Sinha said the CRPF had asked the States to earmark one company each to be deployed "exclusively as a strike force that can act on an intelligence tip off at short notice."

"We have sent a formal proposal to the States and are awaiting their response. Such a strike force would be effective in combating insurgents and would help cut through red tape and delays associated with intelligence sharing," he said. — PTI
