Production resumes at Toyota plant

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Production at the Bidadi plant of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Private Limited resumed on Saturday after the management lifted the 14-day lockout that was declared on January 8 following workers' strike protesting the management's decision to dismiss three employees on disciplinary grounds.

However, the unions have urged the State Government to issue necessary orders as suggested by the Labour Commissioner.

The company said in a statement that over 200 workers out of the nearly 3,000 employees resumed work on Saturday after signing a good conduct declaration.

"We have also got calls from many team members who reside in north and south Karnataka informing us that they are on their way to Bangalore to resume duty. They were apprehensive of the threat of violence from the union. However, we expect most of the team members to attend work in a few days," A. R. Shankar, General Manager, Corporate Planning, TKM said.

`A dilatory move'

The unions alleged that about 850 workers were rounded up and taken into custody by police when they went to the Secretariat to request the Principal Secretary (Labour) to pass immediate orders as recommended by the Labour Commissioner.

The unions have termed the lifting of the lockout as a "dilatory move" on the part of the company management and urged the State Government to issue "immediate order" as suggested by the Labour Commissioner.
