KOLKATA: Tejesvi Rao, combining aggression with technique, won the boys' singles title in the ONGC-ITF junior (grade III) tennis tournament here on Saturday. Fifth seed Tejesvi had no trouble as he defeated third seed Ivan Anikanov of Ukraine in straight sets in the final. Tejesvi failed to make it a grand double when he lost the doubles final, partnering Akshay Bajoria, against the top-seeded pair of Rupesh Roy and Sumit Prakash Gupta.
Dominates proceedings
The Indian dominated the proceedings from the start. The Ukrainian, in his third final, having lost the earlier two to Rupesh Roy and Sanam Singh, hoped to be lucky at least the third time. But Tejesvi had other ideas as he spoilt his party. Anikanov produced big serves, but committed too many unforced errors to make it easy for the Indian. This was Tejesvi's maiden ITF crown and fetched him 60 ITF points. The girls' singles final turned out to be a more one-sided affair with Palkina, the top seed, proving too good for unseeded Shin as breezed through in just 57 minutes. The results (finals): Boys: Singles: Tejesvi Rao (Ind) bt Ivan Anikanov (Ukr) 6-4, 6-4. Doubles: Rupesh Roy & Sumit Prakash Gupta (Ind) bt Akshay Bajoria & Tejesvi Rao (Ind) 6-1, 6-3. Girls: Singles: Ksenia Palkina (Kgz) bt Jung-Yoon Shin (Kor) 6-2, 6-1.
