ULFA kills trader, blows up gas pipeline

Offshore oil security committee reviews security measures

GUWAHATI: Suspected ULFA militants blew up a gas pipeline late on Friday night and shot dead a grocery shop owner on Saturday in two places under Sonari police station of upper Assam's Sivasagar district.

Police said that suspected militant blew up the gas pipeline belonging to Assam Gas Company late on Friday night at Sonari cutting off gas supply between Duliajan and Moran.

In the other incident, two cycle-borne suspected ULFA militants shot dead a grocery shop owner at Teokghat near Assam-Nagaland border under Sonari police station on Saturday evening. Police said that the ULFA had served extortion notice on the trader demanding Rs. 15 lakh from him.

Police on Friday morning recovered the body of a person suspected to have died in Friday night's grenade attack by suspected ULFA militants at the main entrance of the Guwahati Refinery.

The Offshore Oil Security Coordination Committee which met here on Saturday evening reviewed the security measures taken up by the police and other security agencies in and around oil companies in the wake of the ULFA demand note of Rs. 500 crore served to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and stepped up attack on oil installations. The meeting decided to intensify the security measures to thwart any bid by ULFA to kidnap oil company officials and personnel.
