110 companies confirm participation in IT show

Staff Reporter

The show to be held in Kochi from January 31 to February 4

KOCHI: As many as 110 national and international information technology companies have confirmed participation in the IT Kerala 2006 show being organised at the InfoPark here from January 31 to February 4 by the IT Kerala Mission.

State IT Secretary P.H. Kurien said here on Saturday that 1,10,000 sq. ft. of the area to be readied for the show has been booked by companies including Infosys, Wipro and Sutherland Corporation.

Mr. Kurien said the show would be a great opportunity for the unemployed youth of Kerala. He said that he expected about 25,000 students and young people to attend the job registration session at the show. Already 18,000 confirmed registration, he said.

A meeting was convened here by the district administration and IT Kerala officials to discuss the arrangements for the show. Free bus service from the city would be made available for the people to visit the IT show.

According to Mr. Kurien, this is a major effort like the Global Investor Meet and that he expected the State to take full advantage of the large number of enquiries that were coming in.

He also said that a major multi-national company wanted to open a special economic zone in Ernakulam district.

It would provide jobs for at least 7,500 people initially and the company would also set up a training centre for the BPO sector. He said that the training centre could be raised to the status of a university in future. He did not mention the name of the company as negotiations were still on.

The facility would come up on a 25-acre area and the Government was just acting as a facilitator providing only benefits under the State's IT policy.

He said that signing of the agreement with Dubai Internet City for developing the proposed Smart City would be possible by the middle of February. The district administration is in the process of acquiring 135 acres of land immediately for the Smart City project.

District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said that it would be possible to complete the land acquisition process quickly.

At the IT show, there will be several sections. One of them will be Digital Life Style Show, he said.
