Low turnout in Maharashtra bypolls
Special Correspondent
MUMBAI: T
he voter turnout in the bypolls for Maharashtra's Vengurla, Rajapur and Sangameshwar Assembly constituencies on Saturday was lower than in the general elections. The trend was the same in polling for the Sangli Lok Sabha seat.
According to Chief Election Officer U.P.S. Madan, preliminary estimates suggested that 54 per cent voters cast their votes in Vengurla, 60 per cent in Rajapur and 65 per cent in Sangameshwar, as against 65 per cent, 70 per cent and 66 per cent for the 2004 general elections.
In Sangli, about 50 per cent voters exercised their franchise.
Mr. Madan said polling was peaceful. The counting will be held on Monday.
