Bangalore: The pleas of units in the Peenya Industrial Estate for improving infrastructure have been finally heard.

The first step in that direction was taken on Saturday with the launch of the Peenya Infrastructure Corridor Upgradation Project at an estimated cost of Rs. 26.3 crores.

The project, launched by Commissioner for Industrial Development Mohammed Sanaulla, will address 11 components, including road network, streetlights, solid waste management, common testing laboratory, working women's hostel, child care centre, common tool room, entrepreneurial training institute, and information and marketing assistance.

Mr. Sanaulla said the Government would assist the project as the contribution of small and medium industries located in Peenya had been substantial. The Government, he said, had been addressing infrastructure issues, realising that it would accelerate growth.

Giving details of the project, R. Prithviraj of Peenya Industries Association (PIA) said RITES was conducting the survey and involved in the design for the project and that tenders would be called in four weeks.

The funds for the project would come from the Union Government (Rs. 19.7 crores), State Government (Rs. 2.65 crores) and from beneficiaries in Peenya (Rs. 3.95 crores).

The Union Government had released Rs. 8 crores, the State Government Rs. 97 lakhs and the beneficiaries Rs. 1 crore.

The beneficiaries presented the cheques to the Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association, which is the nodal agency.

The cheques were presented to MTMA Director-General A. Mukherjee.

PIA President A. Padmanabha said that industries in Peenya were suffering because of lack of infrastructure and hoped that the project would give a push to the small and medium units.

PIA Secretary R. Basavaraj proposed a vote of thanks.
