Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have arrested Aslam (35), son of Mohammed Basu of Bilal Estate and recovered computers and accessories worth Rs. 4 lakhs, which he had lifted from 14 shops during the last few months. The city witnessed frequent incidents of burglaries in shops dealing with computers and accessories. In all the incidents, the booty used to be only computers and accessories. The novel modus operandi baffled the police. The Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore city, Karan Singha and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Vidya Kulkarni, constituted special teams to probe the thefts. A team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime - Central), R. Sundarrajan, kept tabs on notorious criminals, ex-convicts, dossier criminals and discharged prisoners. Night patrol teams were told to keep a watch on computers shops. One of the teams, led by Inspector K. Palanisamy (Crime) of Kattoor police station, spotted a person moving around in a suspicious manner on Patel Street in Ram Nagar on Friday. During search, computers and related gadgets were found in the gunny bag, which he was carrying. Interrogation revealed that Aslam was involved in thefts in 14 shops in R.S. Puram, Kattoor, Sai Baba Colony, Race Course and Peelamedu police station limits since August last.
